Povo Pilates and Hair removal milestones …

By Marilyn Tuna

I’ve been taking safety precautions for detailed home hair removal for quite some time now, along with many other in-home functional task safety adjustments—like stacking the dishwasher while seated, among others. It all began when I found out my lumbar spine had decided to collapse and needed to be reconstructed almost a year ago.

It’s been a humbling and complex journey to navigate, especially coming from a background as an ex-elite athlete who once taught Arnold Schwarzenegger Russian kettlebell sport. One might say it was a swift change of pace. Nevertheless, the only way to keep my psychological momentum was to see this as yet another personal challenge—to maintain my strength and mobility without fucking myself up more than I already was.

Today I hit a massive milestone. I stood up in the shower, put my leg on the ledge, and shaved my legs—balanced perfectly in all my naked, hairy glory. I even managed to get the bikini line done without needing to sit on the floor. This is not a position I would call graceful. In the beginning, my poor partner was given the task, which led to a very deep (and hilarious) bonding experience that I feel all couples should go through at least once.

These milestones are really important—the ones no one sees. The personal victories in daily life that I’ve been relentlessly training for, day in and day out. Not to win any more gold medals. All I want to do is shave my bloody legs without the fear of falling over in the shower.

This is where the idea for Povo Pilates slowly took shape. Partly because I simply didn’t have the funds to pay for Pilates, and partly because during the acute healing stage (which lasted a good few months), leaving the house wasn’t an option. Over the last 12 months, I’ve intuitively navigated my way back to my new optimal, and I’ve done it by simply making time to move around on the floor each morning.

Obviously, my 25 years of strength and mobility coaching has been a massive help in my personal rehabilitation process—but I won’t lie, there have been a few “maybe I shouldn’t have done that move” moments.

Strength training is non-negotiable for me, but the volume, intensity, and load programming have shifted significantly. Mobility and targeted floor work have taken the front seat in my training protocols and cycles. Now, as I navigate full-on menopause (thanks to endo and its delightful sister symptom called fucken frozen shoulder due to a lack of estrogen), I’ve got even more bodily roadblocks to manage. And I don’t doubt there’ll be more. But with this habit cemented into my daily routine, I feel mostly empowered to work around whatever gets thrown at me.

Also handy when I wake up at 3 a.m. with hot sweats and hormonal insomnia—I use that time to fuck around and find out on the yoga mat. (For the young ladies reading this: YES, this will happen to you.)

So, by popular demand—and in celebration of today’s standing milestone with freshly shaved legs and a nice, tidy nether region— in the coming days I will be rolling out my, 4-week Povo Pilates program. Every single session has been tried, tested, and given my midlife stamp of approval. Open to all abilities.

Happy Hairless Friday!
