People’s pain and hardship cannot be commodified in this space. This space exists simply to inspire anyone who is struggling to cope or searching for a way through.

The art is a gift from myself and every participant. These images capture a moment in time that allowed us to realise that our pain has given us something priceless:

Wisdom and resilience.
They form the desire lines we walk as we move through each new storm we face, again and again.

Desire Lines is an exploration of resilience — the quiet, often unseen strength of individuals who have endured great physical or mental pain and transformed it into wisdom, creativity, and courage. In a world that frequently views medically misunderstood or neurodivergent people as liabilities rather than assets, this project seeks to highlight their value and redefine how we perceive “ability.”

Through this body of work, I aim to challenge the rigid boundaries that Western society places on what it means to be a “normal” or “functioning” human being. The individuals featured in Desire Lines — through portraiture, interviews, and storytelling — embody the spirit of perseverance. Their journeys reveal that pain, while often isolating, can also be a powerful teacher and connector.

Our community has much to gain from embracing these lived experiences — the lessons of patience, adaptation, creativity, and empathy that emerge from adversity. Desire Lines seeks to bring these perspectives to the forefront, inspiring strength, understanding, and a deeper sense of unity in the face of life’s trials.

I invite anyone who wishes to share their story — to pose, be interviewed, or collaborate — to take part in the Desire Lines online and onsite exhibition, book, and future installations. Together, we can reframe resilience not as survival alone, but as a living testament to the strength of the human spirit.
